Adult Ladies Footballers Power Through To Div.2 Cup Final

Castleknock 6-13 Lucan Sarsfields 2-8

A shaky start turned into a rock-solid second-half performance as Castleknock powered their way to a 17-point victory over Lucan in this Adult Cup Div. 2 Knock-out match in Somerton on Wednesday evening (August 28).

An Emma Finney point on four minutes got Castleknock off the mark but it was the next four minutes when Lucan scored 1-3 that suggested this would not be the home team’s evening.

Between then and half-time however Castleknock tightened up in defence and took some excellent scores beginning with an Aisling O’Connor goal after she was set up by Eimear Griffin. Eimear Griffin herself grabbed the second goal and points flowed from Ciara Burgess, Aisling O’Connor (2), the first after a great Mairead Griffin recovery, Emma Finney and Eimear Griffin again to give Castleknock a 2-6 1-6 half-time lead.

In spite of a Jess Comerford point Lucan hit back with a well worked goal five minutes into the second-half to leave Castleknock just one point ahead 2-7 2-6.

It was then the home team went into overdrive getting out in front when it mattered most, defending tenaciously and putting together some terrific moves. In the next 10 minutes Castleknock scored 1-4 to go into a clear eight-point lead.

Caitlin Coffey stuck the Lucan crossbar with a fierce shot but in the very next move she made no mistake driving the ball to the visitors’ net. Jess Comerford brought her points total to three added to by scores from Aisling O’Donnell and Aoife Whelan, the latter after a very patient build-up.

The game ended as a contest when Castleknock scored three goals in three minutes between the 22nd and 25th minutes of the half. Aoife Whelan scored the first of those, the score of the evening, following a brilliant uninterrupted pitch-length move.

Aisling O’Donnell and Eimear Griffin got the other goals to finish off a satisfying evening’s work.

Apart from that early four-minute spell the defence put in an impressive display, constantly slowing the Lucan forwards and forcing them away from goal.

Overall it was a very pleasing performance and when you consider that when these two teams met only a few weeks ago Castleknock had only a point to spare, this evening’s winning margin speaks volumes for the team’s improved work-rate and accuracy.
