AFL9 Footballers Denied By Scorekeeping Error?

Official Score: Castleknock 2-10 Clann Mhuire 1-17

A simple scorekeeping error may yet deny Castleknock an AFL9 play-off place as a result of this 2-10 1-17 defeat by Clann Mhuire in Somerton this afternoon (Aug,18).

The official half-time score was given as 0-7 apiece when in fact Castleknock then led by 0-8 0-6 but that apparently small difference had a hugely decisive impact on Castleknock’s tactical approach to the game particularly in the final quarter.

That said, given the number of goal opportunities, this was a game Castleknock could and quite possibly should have won. Castleknock’s eight first-half scores came from Mark Prunty (4), Eoin Sayers, Brian Hughes, Andrew Hughes and Philly Conlon who scored a 45 with his first touch after coming on for Shane Carolan who suffered a recurrence of the hamstring injury he picked up against Clontarf.

Wind assisted Clann Mhuire started the second-half in confident fashion going into an 0-8 0-11 lead. Castleknock responded with a glorious goal 12 minutes into the half. Andrew Hughes used his searing pace to slice through the Clann Mhuire defence before laying the ball off to Eoin Sayers who drilled the ball low to the net to level the scores.

However a Clann Mhuire goal a minute later, after a fine Alex Griffith save, restored the visitors’ momentum. Mark Prunty and Eoin Sayers points kept Castleknock in it and even though Clann Mhuire scored four in-a-row, as time ran out the impressive Eoin Sayers was on hand to grab his and Castleknock’s second goal to suggest the game could yet be saved.

Unfortunately the final whistle sounded before that was possible.

The bad news is that Castleknock have dropped down to 5th place in the AFL9 but the good news is that they still have two matches in hand on the 4th placed side Cuala and are just one point behind them.

It’s far from over.

Castleknock: Alex Griffith; Ben Mulcahy; Adam Coffey; Liam O’Sullivan; Dave McGinty; Gavin O’Connor; Mick O’Hara; Oisin Murphy-O’Kane; Sean Fitzsimons; Mark Prunty, Andrew Hughes; Brian Hughes; Eoin Sayers; Shane Carolan; Paul Henry. Subs: Philly Conlon; Eoghan Kearney; Sean Nagle; David Geraghty.

Managers: Mick Lynch, Paul Hughes.

AFL2 Good News On Graham

The good news, following Graham Hannigan’s injury on Friday night is that he is up and moving. Fantastic to hear that Graham.
