Below Par Championship Performance Sees Senior Hurlers Lose Out

Castleknock 0-16 Naomh Barróg 1-20

A below-par performance saw Castleknock’s Senior Hurlers lose the final Group match in the Senior ‘B’ Championship by 7-points to Naomh Barróg on a soggy evening in Somerton (July 10th).

In spite of an excellent start when Castleknock scored four points in the first five minutes from Luke Whelan, Liam Quinn, Cian Boyle and Niall O’Callaghan the home team found it impossible to sustain that level of superiority as the game wore on.

A fine Seamus O’Carroll point on the run was sandwiched between two Niall O’Callaghan 65’s and a terrific Jack Banks save to give Castleknock a 0-7 0-4 lead after 23 minutes but the rest of the first-half turned the game on its head.

During those 7 minutes, some excellent Jack King defending wasn’t enough to stop Naomh Barróg outscoring Castleknock by 0-6 0-1 to leave the visitors leading at the break by 0-10 0-8.

A resurgent Castleknock hit the ground running at the start of the second-half with points from Sean Ryan and Niall O’Callaghan (2) putting them back in front at 0-11 0-10 but from then until the final whistle Naomh Barróg outscored Castleknock by 1-10 0-5.

Luke Whelan was responsible for three of those Castleknock points the others coming from Niall O’Callaghan who scored 0-7 in total and a second point for Sean Ryan.

Even though Naomh Barróg always looked in control there was still only four points in it as the game went into time-added-on but in spite of a few Castleknock goal chances during those final minutes it was Barróg that had the last say with the late goal that wrapped up the game.

Castleknock have still qualified for the Senior ‘B’ Hurling Championship Quarter-Finals but their task may have been made somewhat more difficult by this defeat.
