Calum Farrell Memorial Cup report

(11 Jun 2019)

Castleknock GAA club hosted the Calum Farrell memorial cup in Somerton on Sunday 9th June.

6 local clubs participated, Castleknock, Erin go Bragh, Oliver Plunketts E/R, St. Brigid's, St. Peregerine's and Tyrellstown. All teams descended on Somerton for 12.15pm where the Castleknock boys and girls were put through their paces by strength and conditioning coach Graham Norton and the Castleknock Senior Team. Senior manager Lar Norton was present keeping a watchful eye out for up and coming talent.

Prior to throw in all 270 participants paraded behind the Finglas Youth band. At 1pm the ball was thrown in for all 270 enthusiastic children who were playing their first competitive games under the Go Games Rules. All 69 castleknock boys and 32 castleknock girls gave great accounts for themselves and showed their skills on the pitches.

After the 4 rounds of matches, all teams were presented with medals and goody bags. The sun was shining with the exception of one mini downpour which didn't stop the fun. Gleeson's butchers feed the large crowd with their delicious burgers. A magician and face painters entertained the children while the parents mingled with  neighbouring clubs and all availed of the teas and coffees. A number of the 2012 participants from the 6 clubs involved drew the winners of the extensive raffle.

The day finished with a mentors game of bare foot football officiated by the club GPO, Maria Bergin. Unfortunately Jim Gavin won't be calling on too many mentors in the foreseeable future.

All proceeds from the day will go to purchasing defibrillators for all clubs Involved and the balance to both Temple Street and Crumlin children's hospitals.
