Castleknock Fall Short In Junior 3 Football Championship

(26 Jul 2020)

Castleknock 0-8 Clontarf 1-8

A Clontarf goal 5 minutes from full-time made all the difference as Castleknock failed to build on a fine first-half display into a strong breeze in this Junior 3 All-County Football Championship Round 1 match in Somerton this morning (July 26).

Backed by the first-half breeze Clontarf carved out an early goal opportunity which produced a brilliant diving save from Alex Griffith. However the referee, playing advantage at the time, then awarded a penalty and the value of the save became more apparent as the penalty kick went out to safety off an upright.

Between then and half-time when the sides were level at four points apiece the Castleknock backs in particular tackled and pressurised to perfection. Admittedly it was 13 minutes before wing-back Osgur Murphy-O’Kane set up Liam Quinn for the first home point but when Jamie Tunney, making a welcome return to competitive action, pointed a free a minute later Castleknock held a merited one-point lead.

Osgur Murphy-O’Kane followed up with a scorcher of a point and Ciarán Carey added a fourth to leave Castleknock level and quite happy with the way the game had gone in those first 30 minutes.

In the second-half however the team didn’t capitalise on all that hard work. Within 3 minutes of the restart Clontarf had pushed on into a 3-point lead (0-4 0-7) and it was an up-hill struggle for Castleknock from then on.

An excellent James Doherty point after a great Aaron O’Gara run kept Castleknock hopes alive as did a Jamie Tunney pointed free 20 minutes into the half to leave just two points in it (0-6 0-8). But the goal that Castleknock so badly needed went instead to Clontarf and while Castleknock finished strongly with points from Jamie Tunney and Gary Wynne there was to be no catching their opponents.
