Castleknock Junior Hurlers Sensational 18-Point Championship Turnaround

Castleknock 2-18 St. Jude’s 0-13

Seven points down after twenty minutes in the Junior ‘C’ Hurling Championship against St. Jude’s in Somerton (June 11th) Castleknock outscored their visitors by 2-11 0-2 in the second-half to cruise to an unexpectedly easy 11-point victory and go top of Group 1 as a result.

The first 20 minutes had been almost completely dominated by St. Jude’s who were full value for their 0-10 0-3 lead. An Andy Lonergan pointed free and two fine points from play from Luke Gubbins were all Castleknock had to show for their efforts at that stage but another three Andy Lonergan pointed frees within three minutes and an Eoin Conway point on the run gave the home side some hope going in at the break only trailing by four points 0-7 0-11.

In the third quarter Castleknock completely took over. Yet another Andy Lonergan pointed free began it all, followed by three-in-a-row from play from the impressive Conor Chawke to level the match 10 minutes into the second-half.

It was all Castleknock after that as St. Jude’s seemed to tire. Andy Lonergan and Conor Chawke were on target again before 8 minutes from time a superb Luke Gubbins solo ended with a low shot to the St. Jude’s net to finish the game as a contest.

Substitute Cian Boyle tapped over a free and then survived a hefty challenge to add his second point from play. A well-struck Eoin Conway goal a minute from time more or less wrapped it up but not before Andy Lonergan supplied the icing on the cake with his 9th point of the evening.

The entire team Nos. 1-15 put in a great last 40 minutes during which time the defence tightened up immensely, the midfielders won vital ball and the forwards took some classy scores to send Castlekonk to the top of Group 1 after St. Sylvester’s shock win over St. Joseph’s..
