Junior A Hurlers make it 2 wins from 2 outings in AHL6

(10 Mar 2019)

Sunday 10th March 2019

Following on from a hard fought 4-point victory over Raheny in Somerton 2 weeks ago, our Junior A hurlers travelled to Broomfield to take on St Sylvesters in round 2 of AHL6.

Thankfully the game went ahead on a superb new all-weather surface on what was a bitterly cold and very windy day. Castleknock played with the elements in the 1st half but took some time to settle. After a few wides a fine solo score from Luke Gubbins opened the scoring. Despite having use of a very strong wind, after 15 minutes Castleknock led by only 0-3 to 0-0. The game then sparked to life with a goal direct from a long range free from Declan Tobin, which the Sylvesters keeper misjudged. This was quickly followed by a fine goal from Shane Coffey as well as a monster 100 metre free converted by Brian Lawlor. In the space of a few minutes the margin was now 2-4 to 0-0.
A couple of excellent scores from Brian Hughes, who had been switched from the inside forward line to centre forward, and a free converted by Tommy Lee made the score 2-7 to 0-0 as half time approached. St Sylvesters got their first score on the stroke of half-time, but crucially their centre forward was sent off for two yellow card offences.

Half-Time Score: Castleknock 2-7 St Sylvesters 0-1

Sylvesters now aided by the elements made a strong start to the 2nd half with the first 4 scores to reduce the deficit to 2-7 to 0-5 with 10 minutes played. The Castleknock full back line were under huge pressure but stood up extremely well. Darragh McCormack, making a very welcome return to club colours, played the extra man role very intelligently and was well supported in the full back line by Cian Kelly and David McInerney. After a period under siege once again it was Luke Gubbins who got the scoreboard moving with a fine point following a breakaway move. After an exchange of scores, the margin was 2-10 to 0-8 entering the final 5 minutes. Castleknock finished very strongly with Joe Murray scoring an excellent 1-2 in the closing minutes to leave the final score:

Full-Time Score: Castleknock 3-12 St Sylvesters 0-8

Team Lineup: Brian Lawlor (0-1), David McInerney, Cian Kelly, Darragh McCormack, Ciaran Fay, Declan Tobin (1-0), Brian Carter, Mick McCloskey, Jack Purcell, Aaron Cunningham, Shane Coffey (1-2), Tommy Lee (0-1), Brian Hughes (0-3), Joe Murray (1-2), Luke Gubbins (0-3)

The next round of the league is on Sunday 24 March with a trip to Islandbridge to take on Civil Service, followed by the 1st round of the championship on Sunday 7th April away to Erins Isle.
