Junior Football Championships – Disappointing Day

Junior 1 Football Championship
Castleknock went down to a hugely disappointing two-point defeat 1-11 2-12 to Kilmacud Crokes in the Junior 1 Football Championship in ‘Arctic’ Somerton on Sunday morning (April 14th).

Forced to play with 14 men from the 8th minute of the second-half after the somewhat harsh dismissal of influential midfielder Sean Gibbons Castleknock conceded 1-2 in the last 10 minutes, Kilmacud’s winning goal coming 5 minutes into injury time.

Playing into a gale force wind in the first-half the Castleknock defence did particularly well to limit Kilmacud’s scoring opportunities until the visitors sneaked a 30th minute goal. However Castleknock’s response was almost instantaneous. After a Sam Ryan effort fell short, Mark Prunty was on hand to fist a goal with an Alan Rushe point on the run soon afterwards levelling the score at 1-6 apiece at the break, a very satisfactory position for Castleknock to be in with the advantage of the gale still to come.

Before that the impressive Sam Ryan had pointed 3 times for Castleknock and Ciaran Millmore drove over a fine pointed free into the wind.

On the resumption Sam Ryan added another 3 points and Ciaran Millmore followed up with his first from play to gave Castleknock a 1-10 1-07 just before the Red Card incident.

Even at a numerical disadvantage Castleknock went into the final 10 minutes with a 2-point lead courtesy of Sam Ryan’s 7th point. After 60 minutes play the sides were level but a well-worked Croke’s goal 5 minutes into ‘time added-on’ proved decisive.

Castleknock pressed hard in the final minutes but Kilmacud held out for a fortuitous enough win.

Castleknock: James Igoe; Sean Moran; Peter Mulchrone; Gary O’Hara; Aidan Kearney; Ronan Conway; Eoin Dalton; Alan Rushe (0-1); Sean Gibbons; Robbie McCormack; Ciaran Millmore (0-3); Eoin Devlin; Daniel O’Hara; Mark Prunty (1-0); Sam Ryan (0-7). Subs: Lennon Bracken; Donal Conroy and Dave McConn. Subs not used: James McLaughlin and Adam Feeley.

Junior 3 Football Championship
Castleknock had no answer to Good Counsel in this Junior 3 Football Championship match at Liffey Park also on Sunday morning (April 14th), going down to a heavy 0-3 0-14 defeat in the opening match of this year’s competition.

Castleknock: Alex Griffith; Conor Murray; Aidan Coffey; Ger O’Brien; Mick O’Hara; Ben Mulcahy; Lee O’Sullivan; Joe Murray; Luke McCann; Philly Conlon; Brian Hughes; Luke Gubbins; Eliot O’Neill; Ali Hannigan; Gavin O’Connor. Sub: Brian Carter.

Junior 5 Football Championship
Castleknock and Clanna Gael Fontenoy turned up at Somerton for their meeting in the Junior 5 Football Championship on Sunday afternoon but unfortunately the appointed Referee didn’t.

The two sides agreed to play a ‘friendly’ instead but when the game turned out to be ‘not so friendly’, replacement referee Gerry Kelly decided to call it a day after about 20 minutes of play.
