Ladies Footballers Great Team Display Wins Intermediate Shield Final

Castleknock 5-10 Clann Mhuire 4-6

It took a powerful second-half display for Castleknock to overcome arch-rivals Clann Mhuire in the Intermediate Shield Final in perfect conditions in The Naul this evening (Oct.2).

After a shaky start during which Castleknock gave away two early goals the team gradually settled, eventually getting to grips with the home threat.

Eimear Griffin who scored 3-4 in total was a constant thorn in Clann Mhuire’s side. She scored Castleknock’s first point and more importantly on eight minutes she pounced to boot a loose ball to the home net to give the visitors the kick-start they needed.

The first-half produced end-to-end football throughout with Aisling O’Donnell and Hannah Hanlon points keeping Castleknock in touch as Clann Mhuire scored three well-taken goals in all.

A second Eimear Griffin goal set up by Caitlin Coffey on 19 minutes was another vital score as was Aisling O’Donnell’s perfectly struck goal just three minutes before the break to leave the side’s level at 3-4 apiece at half-time.

At that stage it looked as if it was still anyone’s game but Castleknock got stronger and stronger as the second-half wore on. The third quarter in particular proved decisive with Castleknock scoring five points in-a-row.

Eimear Griffin and Hannah Hanlon scored twice either side of a Caitlin Coffey point to open up a significant five point lead. Clann Mhuire responded well with a goal 11 minutes into the half however typical of Castleknock’s growing control and confidence Caitlin Coffey almost immediately soloed through the home defence to score a superb goal.

Eimear Griffin’s third goal was a real opportunist effort as her ground shot flew into the corner of the Clann Mhuire net to end the game as a contest. Jess Comerford too had an impressive last quarter scoring a fine point before going off injured.

Castleknock dominated the entire second-half with the defence repulsing almost every Clann Mhuire attack in style. The hard work of such as Aisling Mahony, Nicola Fagan, Orlaith Higgins, Louise Mahony and Sinead Comerford provided the platform for this truly terrific team success.

Following the presentation of the Intermediate Shield, Castleknock Captain Jenny Hickey thanked Clann Mhuire for hosting the game and everyone including the players and backroom team for contributing so much to Castleknock’s great success.
