Mixed Fortunes For Minor Hurlers In Championship

Minor Hurling ‘A’ – Castleknock 1-23 Raheny 0-11

The main difference between the two sides in this Minor Hurling Championship Round 1 game was simple. Raheny had one outstanding forward whereas Castleknock had six (even before the introduction of Luke Swan) as the home side gradually pulled away to a not unflattering 15-point win in Somerton this morning (Sept.1).

Elsewhere around the field Castleknock also showed great tenacity and a huge desire to win the dirty ball when it mattered most.

Even playing into the wind Castleknock got off to a flying start with a superb Alex Watson catch in midfield setting-up Eoin Sawyer for a point followed by another from distance from Ronan McCann.

Raheny hit back with three points but that was before Cian Boyle scored four points in four minutes, one from play and three frees to make it 0-6 0-3. Castleknock also won the second quarter by 0-6 0-3 leaving them ahead by 0-12 0-6 at the break, Conor Chawke, Cian Boyle (3) and Eoin Sawyer (2) the other first-half scorers.

Backed by a stiff breeze in the second-half Castleknock driven on by some great midfield and defensive play took complete control.

Conor Murray hit the half’s opening point which was added to by two each from Matthew Lynam and Cian Boyle before sub Luke Swan did what he does best, driving the sliotar low to the Raheny net to give Castleknock a 1-17 0-8 lead.

Before the end Cian Boyle brought his total for the morning to 0-12 while Tomás ‘Mossy’ O’Ceallaigh and Conor Chawke (2) also got in on the scoring act in the final ten minutes to give Castleknock a comfortable opening day win.
