Nail-biting Finish As Castleknock Win AFL9 Promotion Play-Off

Castleknock 2-14 Clann Mhuire 1-15

After being 10 points clear with 13 minutes to go Castleknock had to dig deep to hold off a late Clann Mhuire scoring surge to win this ultra-competitive AFL9 Promotion Play-off by two points in the Naul this afternoon (Nov.10).

A blistering first quarter by the end of which Castleknock led by 2-4 0-2 provided some great scores including goals from Castleknock’s top scorers Lennon Bracken on four minutes and Shane Carolan on ten.

Lennon Bracken added two points both from play and Shane Carolan struck a superb point from distance before the particularly mobile David Sweeney put Castleknock into that well merited eight-point lead.

Clann Mhuire then showed they couldn’t be taken for granted with five well struck points before the break but Castleknock continued to move well.

A superb pass out of defence by the inspiring Ger O’Brien set-up Lennon Bracken for a point. Niall O’Donoghue twisted and turned until making the space to add another point and Shane Carolan finished the half with two of his own to leave Castleknock seven ahead at the break, 2-8 0-7.

Thirty seconds after the restart Shane Carolan came within a whisker of grabbing a third Castleknock goal but he got it spot on less than a minute later with another great point. Pushed on by Dave McGinty at centre-back as well as the wing and corner-backs Castleknock then moved into what seemed an unassailable lead.

Following a brilliant Alex Griffiths save, Shane Carolan pointed yet again as did Lennon Bracken (2) and substitute Sean Fitzsimons to make it 2-13 0-9. However, Castleknock’s only other point came with five minutes to go courtesy of a Lennon Bracken pointed free while Clann Mhuire scored 1-6 to finish strongly.

Castleknock hearts were in their mouths when with seconds remaining and Castleknock leading by just two points, a head high Clann Mhuire free crashed back off a Castleknock upright before the siege was finally lifted.

The objective at the start of the year was to gain promotion which has now been achieved and in the most dramatic circumstances imaginable.

After the match the team management paid tribute to all the players for their efforts throughout a long campaign and added a special thanks to the AFL6 management team of Stephen Byrne, Emmet McGarvey, Johnny Murphy and Mick Byrne who helped out in so many different ways.
