Powerful Last Quarter Sees Castleknock Through To JHC Semi-Final

Castleknock 3-19 Faughs 0-14

Castleknock outscored Faughs by 2-5 0-1 in the final 15 minutes to go through to the Junior ‘C’ Hurling Championship Semi-Final after this double-scores, 14 point victory in Somerton on Sunday morning (Sept.8).

Fourteen minutes into the second half there was just four points between the sides but Castleknock’s superior accuracy, fitness and teamwork in the final quarter proved decisive.

Castleknock got off to a fine start, Andy Lonergan and Paul Hughes, scoring early points. A goal and a point for Paul Hughes was then followed by further points from Tommy Lee, Joe Murray and Andy Lonergan to make it 1-6 0-2, a feature of those early exchanges being great catches by Brian Lawlor and Cian Kelly while under pressure.

Castleknock led at the break by 1-9 0-7 courtesy of more scores from Andy Lonergan (2) and Paul Hughes again. A scoring burst at the start of the second-half from Andy Lonergan, Paul Hughes (1-4 in total) and Tommy Lee pushed Castleknock into a seven point lead, 1-12 0-8 but Faughs then punished Castleknock with four points from frees to keep the game alive.

Points from sub. Darragh McCormack and Andy Lonergan, his sixth, eased Castleknock’s fears before that powerful last quarter display removed them completely.

Andy Lonergan, after a terrific cross-field ball from Joe Murray, blasted to the Faughs net with four minutes to go and Aaron O’Gara who gave an outstanding display throughout struck with a third goal in time-added-on.

The points came from sub. Brian Carter, Aaron O’Gara, Andy Lonergan who finished with 1-8, Luke Gubbins, with Joe Murray having the final say from an awkward angle out on the left.

A satisfying victory in the end but there are likely to be even tougher challenges ahead.
