Senior Camogie Team Celebrate Victory (And 21st Birthday)

(30 Aug 2020)

Castelknock 4-11 Good Counsel 2-8

After the disappointment of narrowly missing out on a Championship knock-out place, Castleknock got back to winning ways with a well-deserved nine point victory over Good Counsel in the Senior 2 Shield Semi-Final in Somerton this afternoon (Aug.30).

Apart from a short spell in the final 10 minutes when Good Counsel pressed desperately, in an effort to save the game, Castleknock were always in control.

In the first 30 minutes Castleknock kept the scoreboard constantly ticking over. Two Aisling O’Neill points got the home team moving before centre-back Molly O’Neill knocked over a fine long range free.

On 17 minutes Aisling Andrews won a close-in free which Bronagh Quinn then drove to the Good Counsel net. Aisling O’Neill tagged on another two stylish points and in between those scores, Aisling Andrews, celebrating her 21st Birthday and Captain for the day, went on a powerful run through the Good Counsel defence before crashing the ball to the net. Happy Birthday Aisling.

A Bronagh Quinn point from play just before the interval left Castleknock 2-6 0-5 ahead at the break with good Castleknock defending restricting Good Counsel to only one score from play in that first-half.

The third quarter produced much of the same as a Bronagh Quinn point was followed by a terrific Aoife O’Sullivan goal and after the same player won a penalty, up stepped Bronagh Quinn to drive home her second and Castleknock’s fourth goal.

Aisling O’Neill capped a tremendous display with her fifth point from play and Emma Strappe added another fine score just before the second Water-Break.

Substitute Caitlin Coffey who had been given a bit of a rest after her exertions in last evening’s Ladies Football Intermediate Final, then sent over the game’s final two points.

A good all-round performance from goalkeeper Lauren Finney all the way to corner-forward Bronagh Quinn. A physical game as well and one which should stand Castleknock in good stead for their Shield Final meeting with Ballinteer.
