U14 Camogie girls - Div 3 Camogie Champions

(20 Oct 2019)

The U14 Division 3 Camogie final was played between old rivals Castleknock and Fingallians at The new home of Dublin Camogie development at the National Sports Centre on Saturday 19th.

The match was a thrilling, entertaining and keenly contested affair with a well rounded Castleknock team under captain Ruth Linnane bringing home the Peig Rigney Cup.

Fingallians, playing with the mild breeze were quick out of the traps from the throw in, taking the first score and exerting some early dominance.

Castleknock, lead by their player of the match Roisin Brady from half back where she dominated the back field, kept their composure and the work ethic that brought them to the final and soon had the first goal of the match from Aoife Keane’s fine strike. A free from Sarah McMenamin followed to take Castleknock into a period of ascendency.

Two Fingallians points were interspersed with Castleknock scores from Saoirse Behan with a goal and point, Ruth Linnane scored an excellent point and Sarah McMenamin’s second free. Aoife Byrne rounded off the first half scoring with one of the finest solo goals seen at U14 level. Picking up the sliotar on her own 40, she advanced all the way to the Fingallians 20 before unleashing an unstoppable shot to the back of the net. At the break Castleknock lead by 3-4 to 0-3.

Fingallians started the second period at breakneck pace, recognising they needed early scores to get back into the match. They picked up a scrappy goal and point, the only time the dominant Castleknock goal keeper Eimear Sutton was to be beaten on the day.

With the contest very much alive, Castleknock needed the next score to settle the nerves. Their prolific goal poaching full forward Saoirse Behan reacted quickest to a batted down ball to take her second goal. She followed that up with a very similar repeated poached goal and 2 points. Alison Callinan who had fed the full forwards all afternoon from the half line picked up her well earned final point of the game.

The extended Castleknock squad worked exceptionally hard throughout the championship campaign and finished the final with a comfortable margin of victory, 5-7 to 1-4. Congratulations to both teams on a highly entertaining and well played final.
